Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• Parcel firm Red Star is for the first time turning to owner-drivers to service its established collection and delivery rounds.

Drivers will be paid on a per collection and drop basis and encouraged to build their own customer bases.

Red Star claims it will benefit from reduced fleet and running costs, plus the local knowledge of its new drivers. Its retained fleet is not affected by the move.

Two drivers have been appointed to date and assigned to the Birmingham New Street Parcel I'. int. But Paul Robson, regional operations director for Midlands and the South-West says the recruitment drive will become national.

"It's something we're looking to roll out," he says. "We're not looking for man and a van, but committed owner-drivers."

There is a financial support package available for those who wish to buy new trucks and vans.

All recruits will need to have their vehicles painted in the Red Star livery.
