• Following pressure by the Transport and General Workers Union, the Northern General Transport Co Ltd, and associated firms, are dismissing 68 students recruited as temporary bus conductors. The companies' drivers and conductors, who claimed that the employment of temporary conductors reduced their earnings, because of less overtime, had threatened strike action unless their demand for the dismissal of the students was met.
A union official said that apparently students has been employed on a temporary basis for some years, without the union's knowledge or approval.
