Digital Torquemeter A NEW digital torquemeter Type 1502 is now available from

Dawe Instruments Ltd. It permits measurement of torque consistently to an accuracy of 0-25 per cent or better. The instrument, a commercial version of a basic design originated by the Ford Motor Co. Ltd., is claimed to be the first of its kind in the world. The system comprises two units, a torsiometer and a digital torquemeter, connected to each other by up to 50 ft. of cable.

The instrument can be used in the automobile industry to assess the efficiency and performance of mechanical power transmission systems; with conventional, brake dynamometers accurate measurement is either difficult or impossible. ,

The torsiometer is a shaft of accurately calibrated stiffness located in two precision bearings mounted in a cast housing: it is coupled by flanges to the power transmission under test. Both ends of the torsiometer shaft are fitted with steel discs, having 20 evenly-spaced radial slots. The two discs are offset• 3° to each other under zero torque conditions.

A light source and photocell are mounted facing each other across each disc, giving rise to two trains of electrical pulses as the shaft rotates. As torque increases, the shaft twists and consequently the time lag between the two trains of pulses increases.

To eliminate torsional vibrational effects, readings are averaged over one, two, four or eight shaft revolutions—chosen by selecting the appropriate frequency dividers.

The torquemeter operates over a speed range of 1005000 r.p.m. with an accuracy typically better than 0.25 per cent for a 3° twist. There are standard torsiometer shafts for maximum torque limits of 1, 50, 100, 500, 1,000 and 2,000 lb. ft.

The standard torquemeter (designed for 19 in. rack mounting) measures 19 in. by 10 in. by 121 in. and weighs 34 lb. A bench model is also available. The torsiometer measures• 131 in. by 91 in. by 9+ in. (weight 60 lb.).

Polyurethane Foam Dispenser riA PORTABLE, self-contained unit for dispensing frothed polyurethane foams has been developed by Perameters Co. Ltd. The unit, called the Meterfroth, is designed for on-site foaming applications. It is claimed to be simple to operate and to have the accuracy and consistency vital in this type of machine. Operation is by compressed air, consumption being 5 c.f.m. free air at 80 p.s.i.

The Meterfroth is suitable for use in the refrigeration industry, in road and rail transport and is said to have a wide variety of insulation and structural applications.

The mixing head features a helix developed by Du Pont. Additions made by Pcrameters include integral valves, integral solvent flush, perametet check valves (fitted to each material inlet to the head), and trigger-operated on/off control.

The unit has a capacity of 2-15 lb. per mm. and weighs 1-75 cwt. Dimensions are 2 ft. 9 in. by 3 ft. 3 in. by 1 ft. 6 in, A comprehensive after sales service is provided by the company and spares are available ex-stock.

Made by: Perameters Co. Lid., 100 Harleyford Road, London, S.E.1 I Close-coupled Trailer NEWLY developed Tollbridge Trailers, of Lymington, is a

11-ton capacity, close-coupled four-wheel trailer, designed specially for use by builders arid contractors. It has a strong, rolled-steel chassis and frame, wooden bed and sides.

The FB2 builders' trailer has independent suspension on all four wheels (by rubber torsion units). It is equipped with 5-90-13 6-ply tyres and the 8-in. drum brakes are operated by rods and an overrun device on the hitch. Standard fittings are rubber wings, a telescopic jockey wheel on the tow bar and a pair of drop stands at the rear.

The trailer's body is 5-ft. 4-in, wide and 10-ft. 9-in. long. A full width 3-ft.-high removable steel bolster is fitted to the front. Fitted both to front' and sides is 1-ft-high ply on a welded steel frame. The tailboard may be of the hinged type (for loading plant and so on or of the lift-out, removable type for building materials. When the full range of trailers has been completed models will be available of every type to deal with varied loads of up to 6 tons.
