ALARM that was occasioned among operators and manufacturers by a recent report (not in this journal) regarding the effects of a strike at L. Gardner and Sons Ltd, works has been largely dispelled by the resumption of normal routine by the strikers who, in any case, did not constitute the full labour force. Activity in a section of the factory was suspended for nearly three weeks, but before starting the annual holiday those concerned returned on full overtime. The actual terms of settlement will be d:scussed and ratified when the men return from holiday next Monday. A spokesman for Gardner told The Commercial Motor this week that the gloomy predictions which had been made in some quarters were not likely to be fulfilled. In the case of most models, there was normally a delay of several months between the receipt of order and actual delivery. The company hoped very quickly to overtake any backlog, especially if the men accepted immediate overtime in the post-holiday period. Products to be exhibited at The Commercial Motor Show would be as before, but 'research was, as always, continuing with a view to possible design improvements.
