A POSITIVE step has been taken towards British Road Services joining the Road rI Haulage Association. On Tuesday the following joint statement was issued by the R.H.A. and the Transport Holding Company:
"To promote greater unity within the road haulage industry, the National Council of the Road Haulage Association will be asked at their meeting on Thursday, October 1, 1964, to consider proposals which would make it possible to admit companies of the British Road Services Federation to a special category of membership of the Association.
"The Road Haulage Association was formed in 1945 as the result of a merger of a number of trade associations representing commercial road operators. The object was to establish one body embracing all professional carriers within the road haulage industry, but so far the British Road Services companies have not been represented in the Association."
This move vindicates the suggestion made in The Commercial Motor of January 11, 1963, that "it is by no means impossible that British Road Services might become a member of the Road Haulage Association ". As was pointed out at the time, the R.H.A.'s constitution would have to be changed to permit membership by a Stateowned concern, but already the Association and B.R.S. work together closely on such things as vehicle security and turn-round, as well as being partners in the road/ rail discussions with British Railways.
