r-IN Thursday of last week we were 4..../the guests of the Belgian Ministry of Transport at a function inaugurating the new motm -ferry service beta een London and Ostend, which is being operated by the "LondonIstanbul," a specially equipped ship. The vessel arrived from Ostend with M. Marcel H. jaspar, the. Belgian Minister of Transport, who was
accompanied by many Belgian officials and notabilities.
The Minister presided at a luncheon on board, which was followed by an inspection of the ship; this has accommodation for 60 motor vehicles in two large covered " garages," and a large number of cars was loaded in our presence, but the accommodation is suitable for all types of motor vehicle, including lorries themselves carrying cars.
The present service (which is liable to alteration) is: Dover, 10 a.m., Ostend, 2 p.m.; Ostend, 1 a.m., Dover, 5 a.m.
The single rates for lorries are: not exceeding 2 tons, £5; not exceeding 3 tons, Os. 9d.; not exceeding 4 tons, £7 18s. 8c1.; not exceeding 6 tons, £10; exceeding 6 tons, £12 is. 5d., and for motor coaches:— wheelbase not exceeding 13 ft. 1 in., £4 16s. 7d.; not exceeding 14 ft. 9 ins., £6 4s. 2d.; not exceeding 16 ft.
5 ins., £7 Ifs. 9d.; exceeding 16 ft. 5 ins., £8 19s. 4d.
There is ample accommodation for passengers, all of one class, the single fare being 12s. 6d., and for children between the ages of 3 and 14, 6s. 3d. Seventeen-day excursion tickets will also be issued at a return fare of 17s. 3d. Uniformed chauffeurs are carried free, except for the Dover polltax of approximately 2s. single.
There are 14 two-berth cabins, 83 sleeping berths, a ladies' boudoir, smoking room, saloons, restaurant, and seven bathrooms.
All vehicles are transported at owner's risk and must be at the quay at least one hour before the advertised time of departure.
