• The European Parliament is taking legal action against EU law which lays down minimum rates of annual lorry tax and allows member states to introduce motorway charges.
ME:Ps have complained to the EL; Court of Justice that the Directive 93/89 differs fundamentally from the draft on
which they gave their formal opinion, as required by the Treaty of Rome.
They argue that ministers should have consulted them before adopting the Directive. They also complain that the Directive postpones a harmonised system of lorry taxation until at least mid-1999.
