• A survey of more than 1,000 shop stewards in the United Road Transport Union will help create a more pro-active organisation, says general secretary David Higginbottom.
Improved pay bargaining positions, more cost-effective training for stewards and better lines of communication could be likely benefits from the results of the survey, delivered last week by the Industrial Society. "It could be thar by reorganising the role of our regional officers and introducing training for stewards using distance-learning techniques, we will have more time and opportunities to work on strategies to improve members' conditions. It's no longer enough to negotiate wage demands on the basis of annual increases," hligginbottom says.
