• Major schemes—many of them cited as crucial to industry—were slashed from the £23 billion roads programme last week as the Government cut its building schemes by a third.
The results of the roads review also mean that the East London River Crossing and improvements to the Hull to Merseyside M62, a major crossroute in the north, are both now suspended.
The Freight Transport Association's controller of traffic and highways Don McIntyre says: "It's an absolute disgrace that these two routes aren't in the highest priority category of the review."
