• Haulier John Yates of Stratford, East London is to be sentenced at the end of April, after admitting attempting to bribe a police officer and handling stolen goods.
Yates, of Hampden Park, Eastbourne, initially denied bribery but changed his plea to guilty on two such charges during his trial at Snaresbrook Crown Court.
Prosecuting, Jeremy Benson said that officers from the South-East Regional Crime Squad had kept watch on Yates' haulage premises in Stratford. He was seen unloading 1,440 radiators from a £22,000 truck which had been stolen a few days earlier. The officers kept a log of their observations and after his arrest Yates offered to pay DC John Monksfield £5,000 for that document.
But unknown to Yates, Monksfield had taped their first meeting and when Yates produced half the bribe at a London pub three days later he was arrested.
Judge Richard Howarth remanded Yates on bail for reports are prepared.
