Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• Cummins has finally unveiled uprated versions of its 10-litre engine which takes the popular straight-six L10 above 224kW (300hp) for the first time in the UK — and Sandbach-based ERF is to be the first British truck builder to fit it. A complete description of the latest ERF/L10 trucks will appear in next week's issue.

The latest L10 engines are available at two ratings. For tractive unit applications, the LTAA10-325 produces 242kW (325hp) with a maximum torque of 1,288Nm (950Ibft) at 1,300rpm. There is also a pump-derated version which develops 224kW (300hp), but has the same torque rating as its more-powerful stablemate. The LTAA10-300 is intended for "high-performance" eightwheelers, says Cummins.

Both the LTAA10-300 and the LTAA10-325 feature air-toair charge-cooling — unlike the previously most powerful LTA10-290, which keeps its air-to-water charge-cooling. By adopting air-to-air aftercooling Cummins has been able to keep the weight of its two new power units down: both engines weigh some 25kg less than the current LTA10-290 block.

The LTAA10-325 has a 17% torque rise with a high, flatprofile torque curve, while the derated LTAA10-300 has a 27% torque rise. Both, however, retain the same 800,0001cm specified running period before needing a major overhaul.

In addition to its 224kW LIO engines, Cummins has also produced a derated version of the current LTA10-290, called the LTA10-275, which develops 205kW (275hp) and has a maximum torque of 1,166Nm (8601bft) at 1,300rpm. The LTA10-275 is for multi-wheel rigid application and will be sold alongside the existing 187kW and 164kW L10 engine models.

Following the recent success of its 8.5-litre lightweight turbocharged C Series engine (Vehicle News this week), Cummins has now launched a charge-cooled version, designated the 6CTAA8.3-265, which develops 198kW (265hp) with 949Nm (7001bft) of torque at 1,500rpm. The latest, mostpowerful C Series is intended for "ultra-light" tractive units, as well as multi-wheel rigids. It weighs just 606kg and according to Cummins, offers payload advantages of 140kg.
