• Brewery giant Scottish and Newcastle says it is definitely retaining 72 jobs in beer distribution and retailing at its threatened Matthew Brown brewery in Workington.
The Edinburgh-based group has confirmed that an option to close the brewery's beermanufacturing operations now looks likely. Local labour MP Dale Campbell-Savours fears that few of the distribution jobs would survive once the brewery was sold.
El The Manchester brewery Boddington, which contractedout its distribution to TNT early this year, had almost static profits in 1987 — £14.46 million, compared to 214.42 million in 1986.
