Leyland models — the Super Comet and Bear — thus completing the programme of component rationalization undertaken by Leyland over the last year This programme has reduced the parts inventory employed in producing the Leyland range of 16to 32-ton gvw vehicles, providing considerable savings both to the manufacturer and the vehicle operator.

The complete Leyland truck range falls into four main categories: 16-ton gvw two-axle Super Comet and Lynx models; 22 /24-ton gvw three-axle Bear and Bison models; 26and 24-ton gcw Lynx and Super Comet tractive units; and Buffalo 32-ton gcw tractive units and prime movers.

Vehicles of 16-ton gvw now use common chassis cabs with the Leyland 401 engine, Albion gearbox and Albion rear axle for the Super Comet, and fixed-head 500 engine, TET gearbox and Maudslay rear axle for , the Lynx.

Three-axle vehicles also have common chassis cabs with the turbocharged 410 engine. Albion gearbox and Albion rear axles for the Bear, and 500 engine; TET gearbox and Albion final drive for the Bison.

Lynx and Super Comet 26 and 24-ton gcw tractive units follow a similar pattern with the 410 turbocharged engine and associated transmission in the Super Comet. Buffalo twoand three-axle prime movers and the two-axle tractor have similar frames to their 16. 22/24 and 24/26-ton gvw counterparts but utilize the turbocharged Leyland 510 engine with uprated transmission. Two basic engines will power the new Leyland range — the Leyland 401 series and the fixed-head 500 series — with turbocharged versions for the Super Comet tractor, Bear and Buffalo models.

Frame rationalization has allowed two basic side-member pressings for the complete truck range — a 9.875in.-deep straight pressing for two-axle models. For three-axle trucks two basic front axles of 5.35-ton and 6.5-ton capacity are employed — the 7ft 6in.-wide 5.35-ton beam being used on Super Comet and Lynx tractor chassis.

All models have hub-reduction rear axles of Albion or Maudslay manufacture, with the Maudslay axles employed on Lynx and Buffalo tractors and the Buffalo two-axle prime mover.
