MR. R. G. HALL, transport manager of BICC Construction Co. Ltd., Erith, operates more than N vehicles equipped with lorry-mounted cranes. I talked to him and a number of colleagues to learn of the

company's experience. BICC use several types of lorry mounted cranes but HIABs predominate.

The HIAB-equipped vehicles are used mainly on cable laying and in the erection of transmission lines and aerial systems. Mr. Hall believes that vehicles of 8 tons g.v.w. or more are most suitable for crane work, for on a 3-ton truck one third of the payload is sacrificed. Insufficiently robust crane mountings have given trouble in the past, he told me, but the company's modifications have overcome this. Their experience is that cranes should not be fitted to vehicles with 16 in. wheels.

The HIABs are invaluable in the field erection of 400 KY super grid pylons, I learned. Steelwork in these can weigh up to 60 tons and corner sections weighing 30 cwt. would need derricks for off-loading if HIABs were not fitted. The H1AB 174 is preferred to the earlier 173 model because of the hydraulic folding mechanism.

Mr. Hall's department in effect hires vehicles and equipment to the user company and I was impressed with the comment of one erection gang who pressed their site manager for a lorry-mounted crane. "Let's have a HIAB on our vehicle", they said. "We'll pay for it out of our bonus."
