vtRITISH agents for the German Weyhau sen lorry cranes are Atlas Hydraulic Loaders Ltd., Blackwood, Lanarkshire, Scotland, The Atlas 5000 model lifts 6 tons at short radius; its normal maximum radius is 23 ft. but with an extension boom this is increased to 45 ft. 3 in.. Smaller Atlas versions are available and model 850, shortly to be introduced, has a 12 cwt. lift at 8 ft. radius and can be fitted with a telescopic. boom. A wide variety of special attachments is available. Lorry crane prices range from £340 for the 850 to £2,871 for the 5000 model.
Perhaps the best known of all lorrymounted cranes in Britain is the HIAB Swedish-designed crane distributed by George Cohen Machinery Ltd., 600 Wood Lane, London, W.12. Certain HIAB models are now being built at Letchworth. The cheapest HIAB is model 193, costing £452, with 1-ton carrying capacity at 5 ft. radius and good capacities at extended boom lengths. The HIAB range includes cranes of 1+, 3 and 6 tons capacity. The heavyweight model 506 can lift 391 cwt. at 13 ft. 1 in. radius and can be fitted to vehicles of 7 tons carrying capacity or more. It costs £2,695. An unusually varied range of specialized
attachments is available.
An interesting mini-crane is the TICO K.15, newly introduced by Colchester Tillage Ltd., of Hythe Hill, Colchester. This costs £88 and lifts 1 ton at 37 in. radius or 10 cwt. with jib extended to 5 ft. 5 in. A wheeled trolley costing £45 converts it into a portable crane. The three basic TICO lorry cranes cost from £485 to £940 with lifting capacities from 22+ cwt. to 3 tons. They all incorporate a power-driven winch in the boom enabling loads to be hauled in from awkward sites or pulled up a loading bank or planks. Goods can also be raised or lowered into excavations: the booms swing through 360 degrees in either direction.
Omic Ltd., 300 Gray's Inn Road, London, WC1., are agents for the Danish designed Master lorry crane, a diminutive newcomer to the British market. This 1-as a lifting capacity of 2,420 lb. at 4 ft. 11 in. radius and 1,210 lb. at 8 ft. 1 in. jib extension. The pump cylinder of the Master swings independently of the crane enabling operation in any position. The crane can be quickly transferred between vehicles. Price £120.
Two Sheppard Meiller lorry-loading cranes, Mk.66R and 33R lifting respectively three and two tons are marketed by Sheppard Equipment Ltd., Rymer Lane, Barnham, Thetford. Both are mounted behind the cab and the buckling cantilever jib stows neatly across the vehicle. Normal rotation of these cranes is through 190 degrees but full-circle stewing can be provided optionally at extra cost. Fitments such as telescopic jib extensions, cable winch and fittings for clamp operation are available. Prices inclusive of fitting charge range from £1,030 to £1,385.
Another range of Danish lorry cranes is marketed by Skandia Engineering Ltd., Martlesham Aerodrome, Woodbridge, Suffolk. Six cranes are available ranging from Model A3, lifting 4,000 lb. at 55 in. radius and 1,450 lb. at 138 in. radius to the heavy-duty Hojbjerg A8 crane designed for awkward and heavy mixed goods and lifting a maximum 9,500 lb., with a net crane weight of 2,800 lb. Prices range from £452 to £1,288 with extras for hydraulic pump and power take-off and, of course, for the fitting charge which averages from £35 to £55.
US! Engineering Ltd., Bessemer Road, Welwyn Garden City, Herts., are introducing a range of SKB hydraulically powered lorry cranes from Denmark. The SKB 3500, with 11 standard variations, can lift over 3 tons at short radius and the SKB 4500 lifts approximately 4 tons 8 cwt. at 4 ft. 10 in. radius. Prices range from £870 for the SKB 3500 5K model to £1,385 for the SKB 4500 9K2 version but these prices do not include the pump or drive. Fitting charges are normally around £60. A wide range of optional fitments and appliances is available.
