Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

for HAULAGE 1010R many „years Mr. Thomas Farrimond has been well known in the haulage industry and, amongst -other activities, he has produced a range of

trailers. Now, he is launching the Farrimond oil-engined tractor, which is beinghandled by the Diesel Motor Co.; 13, Virginia Road, Thornton Heath,. London. It is priced at £695 with all equipment, but pneumatic tyres and a.

trailer-brake control are extra. The pneumatic tyres are 32 ins. by 6 ins. in the ease of the front wheels, and 40 ins. by 8 ins. (dual) for the rear wheels.

This machine will haul a, gross load of 15 tons, and it has a single-cylindered. two-stroke-cycle engine rated at 16-30 h.p., and running up to 540 r.p.m. The bore and stroke are 8i ins. and 10f ins, respectively, and the road speed is 12 m.p.h., whilst the fuel con-

630 sumption averages about one gallon per hour.

A hot bulb is employed in this engine, and it can run on pure petrol, oil of almost any viscosity, or on a half-andhalf mixture. There is an electric ignition system which can be switched on or off as required ; the engine will start from cold, the steering wheel being detached and applied to the hub of the flywheel on the off side to rock the crankshaft. Ignition is primarily used for starting and running when cold, but once the bulb warms up it can be switched off.

Vertically disposed in the cylinder head, immediately above the bulb, is a spray nozzle which can be varied to give different degrees at atomization according to the expected load, thereby obtaining the most efficient combustion for the work in hand.

On the off side of the engine, accessibly placed, are the fuel pump and priming lever. In the cab is the fuel control, which allows the driver to make use of the grade of fuel most suited to the needs of the moment.

The cylinder is horizontally disposed and the crankshaft is set across the frame. On one end of it is the flywheel, whilst the clutch is mounted in another flywheel on the near side. This embodies a safety device which prevents the power unit from being damaged should a pull exceeding 25 tons be demanded, i.e., the tractor cannot be overloaded.

Above the crankcase is the air filter which purifies the ingoing stream, first by centrifugal action, and secondly, by passing it through oil-soaked fibre. On the near side of the cylinder is a tap ; from this a passage leads paraffin to the piston rings, thus keeping them free from gumming. This tap is usually employed after switching off the engine at night; it ensures an easy start next day.

A thorough lubrication system, embodying two filters, is employed, the oil being, positively fed even to the gudgeon pin bearing. On the off side of the engine is a belt-driven exhauster fan, circulating air through the segmentaltype radiators which are laterally disposed.

All gear shafts are set -across the frame, the drive being taken from the crankshaft through a train of pinions. There are three forward speeds and a reverse and final drive is by doublereduction, straight-tooth pinions to the

differential. Extensions of the driven shaft of the gearbox carry two brake drums ; one brake system is hand-eontrolled and the other operated by a pedal. If desired a trailer-brake lever can be mounted in the cab.

A point in connection with the controls is that the gear lever cannot slip from any position no' matter what the load. It is centrally placed and of the invisible-gate pattern; A casting in. thick forms the main engine-gearbox casing; the hitch to which the trailer is coupled is bolted directly to this casing. The drawbar eye is oonnected to a volt-de spring which absorbs starting shocks.

Below the1 unsprung live axle is carried a large silencer equipped with a fishtail. Over the offside rear, wing is the battery box, the cells being• set in cement. -This -battery supplies a three lamp lighting set and an electric horn, all of Bosch manufaCture. ' In addition, there is a bulb horn, and the equipment includes a driving mirror, inspection lamp and a full kit of necessary tools, spares and a grease gun.

A steel-lined cab is Mounted on the machine, and the driver's seat is •iiidependently supported on coil springs, with additional rebound springs: 'The front of the machine is carried .on_an inverted semi-elliptic spring 'mounted' below the level of the square-section

front axle. ..tran-shaped plates form the basic supportsfor the front wings, which are made in 21-gauge sheet steel and braced by a tubular cross stay.

(Left) Starting is effected by rocking' the crankshaft -by means of the detachable steering wheel. (Above) The interior of the 63.1); : the seat is independently sprung:
