Trailer for Carrying Timber

NxTE recently bad an opportunity for I" V inspecting a new 10-12-ton allsteel timber trailer, produced by Taskers, of Andover, Ltd., Andover, Hampshire, to the order of Taggart, Morgan and Coke, Ltd., of Southampton. It will operate behind a Latil tractor and it has been specially designed to meet all conditions which may be experienced in hauling timber over rough surfaces, where considerable flexing of the trailer would take place.

This outfit is immensely sturdy, having a main welded-steel tube 23 ft.

long and 6 ins, in diameter. It is arranged to take its pull through the main pin and pass it through both front

and rear, carriages. Incidentally, the rear carriage is free to swivel around the pole, and thus there is no unnecessary stressing of the main pole while

the trailer is passing over an extremely rough surface. It is possible for the front and rear carriages to assume completely different angles.

The whole outfit is adjustable for length. Each carriage is rigidly constructed of channel-steel members, securely gusseted and riveted together. The channel-steel bolsters are 7 ft. long and are plated top and bottom. The top plates have a series of holes therein in order to allow the timber to be levered from one side to the other whilst stanchions are provided at each end ; they can be swung outwards and removed after withdrawal of a pin. Hooks for affixing ramps are fitted to the bolster ends.

Suspension is carried out by means of semi-elliptics, which are securely fitted to the axles, and are attached to the carriages by means of dumb jacks and shackle links. Internal-expanding brakes are .fitted to all four wheels, the shoes in the rear drums being operated independently by hand, when necessary (when manceuvring the trailer, -for -instance); although they can be Connected with the front brakes, and all operated • simultaneously from the tractor. Twin disc •wheets carrying40-in.. by 8-in, pneumatic tyres are employed.

The maximum trailer length-is 35 ft., whilst a netable point is the large clearance allowed between the timber supports and the main pole, so. that. bent trunks can be readily accommodated.
