• Volvo is cutting 5,000 jobs in Europe after profits plunged 52% to SKr2,05bn (2186.2m) for the first six months of this year. The Scottish plant in Irvine, will not be affected.

• Essex police expect their anti-truck theft initiative with the Road Haulage Association to go national next month — just weeks after it was officially bunched in the county. They will hold talks with hauliers' organisations and police forces about setting up similar telephone and fax rings in the Home Counties and Midlands.
