• P&O European Ferries has ordered two superferry freight ships to cope with growing demand, caused in the main by the introduction of the fast-lane customs operation at Dover.

Costing £50m, each ship has the capacity to carry 120, 15m accompanied vehicles and 200 lorry-driver passengers.

The move repeats an order placed in the spring and P&O says it demonstrates its intention to "compete effectively with the Tunnel and other ferry operators".
