Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

been drawn to the lack of a displayed unladen weight, but on checking it is not clear whether this is required. Passenger vehicles are defined as "motor cars" if the seating capacity is more than seven and the unladen weight is under 21/2 tons. Vehicles outside this limit are heavy vehicles and clearly would need to be marked. By inference my vehicle is a "motor car" and need not he marked with the unladen weight. Is this correct or have I missed some later amendment?

A The marking of vehicles is now governed by Regulation 74 of the Motor Vehicles (Construction and Use) Regulations 1973 (no. 24/1973). However, the requirements are similar to those contained in the previous Regulations and call for the marking of the unladen weight only on locomotives, tractors and heavy motor cars.

As you point out, your vehicle is a motor car as defined in Section 253 (2)(c) of the Road Traffic Act 1960 and, therefore need not have the unladen weight displayed.
