Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

AThe carriage and display of side-marker lamps on vehicles is governed by Part VIII of the Road Vehicles Lighting Regulations 1971.

Regulations 40 and 41 provide for a vehicle or combination of vehicles one of which is drawing the other, which exceeds 18 m (60 ft) in length to display on each side one lamp not more than 9m (30 ft) from the foremost part of the vehicle and one lamp not more than 3m (loft) from the rearmost part of tlr, the vehicle. In addition, there should be displayed such other lamps as will ensure that the distance between the side marker lamps is not more than 3m (10ft).

These Regulations do not apply, under Regulation 42, to a combination of vehicles when one of them is broken down or to single vehicles carrying wide or long loads as laid down in Regulation II of the Motor Vehicles Construction and Use regulations 1969 (now Regulation 135 of the C and U Regs 1973).

Regulations 43 and 44 deal with a combination of vehicles over 12 m (40ft) but not exceeding 18m (60ft) which carry a supported load. That is a load supported by any two of the vehicles forming the combination but not a load carried on an articulated vehicle.

In this case one lamp must be carried not forward of and not more than 1,515 mm (5 ft) from the rear of the vehicle and, if the supported load extends more than 9m (30 ft) beyond the rearmost part of the motor vehicle, one lamp not forward of and not more than 1,515mm (5ft) to the rear of the centre point of the overall length of the load.
