CHANGES in the Regulations relating to speed limits for certain vehicles have been proposed by the Department of the Environment.
The new Regulations will allow four-wheel passenger vehicles towing caravans and trailers and meeting weight ratio conditions to travel at 50 mph and those not meeting the conditions at 40 mph on all roads. They will also provide for dual purpose vehicles adapted to carry more than seven passengers to travel at 50 mph instead of 40 as at present. The number of passengers stipulated will be raised from seven to eight. All passenger vehicles subject to the speed limits will be permitted to operate up to 50 mph. At present, those over 30 cwt unladen carrying more than seven passengers and those over 3 tons unladen are limited to 40 mph if they are not psv.
Other alterations are that goods vehicles with drawbar trailers will be able to travel at 40 mph on allpurpose roads in contrast to the present limit of 30 mph; the restriction to 60 mph on motorways of all articulated vehicles; the restriction of vehicles towing more than one trailer to 40 mph on motorways; and the limiting of goods vehicles not fitted with pneumatic tyres to 20mph on all purpose roads.
