Col. Rogers relates how in 1854 Chas. Burrell and Sons, locomotive makers of Thetford, linked up with the optimistically named Boydell Endless Railway Co. The latter produced a form of tracklayer in the shape of a wheel carrying a series of pads with a short length of rail on each pad. The engine ran on the rails thus provided, the whole being calculated to overcome difficulties with the poor roads of the day.
These outfits were manufactured for some seven years. Despite restrictive legislation being brought in to deal with locomotives on the highways the road steamer made quite rapid progress in the next few years.
