Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• A new range of axles will be shown at Earls Court for the first time by Eaton Axles Ltd., (Stand 255). It is known as the Eaton 70 range. Weighing some 80Ib less than the previous models, the axles have been designed to reduce the number of variants required in production, to simplify detail and to exploit the latest advances in production technology.

A conical type of carrier is employed in place of the former ribbed type, which affords a material saving in weight. The housing has a rectangular arm section which is of relatively light weight, but a banjo profile is retained to obviate installation difference compared with older models. A modified throat area gives freedom from stress concentrations.

Other features include a completely new malleable hub casting designed to withstand radial and side loadings with the minimum wall thickness and weight. An improved and simplified oiling system is included in the carrier assembly that feeds the pinion bearings, differential bearings and gears. An increase in gear diameter in the case of the 6.14, 6.5 and 7.17 gear sets caters for higher engine performance, notably the performance of high-speed diesels.
