Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

by Paul Brockington • An uprated Gardner 6LW and an uprated 5LW have been announced this week by Gardner Engine (Sales) Ltd., Eccles, Manchester. The units are called the 6LW.20 and 5LW.20, and the former will be exhibited in the Gardner display (Stand 412) at Earls Court. Production of the standard 6LW and 5LW units will be continued. The new engines have the same bore and stroke and the same basic dimensions as the standard units.

The 6LW.20 develops 120 bhp at 1,700 rpm and a maximum torque of 381 lb.ft. at 1,350 rpm, whereas the 6LW has an output of 112 bhp at the same speed, the maximum torque being 358 lb.ft. at 1,300 rpm. An output of 100 bhp is produced by the 5LW.20 at 1.700 rpm, the corresponding ratings of the 5LW being 94 bhp at 1,700 rpm, and 300 lb.ft. at 1,300 rpm. The increased output and torque ratings have been obtained in each case by detailed modifications to the inlet manifold and pistons, inlet-and exhaust-valve timing, inletand exhaust-valve tappets and guides, fuelinjection pump and fuel-spray characteristics and fuel-injection pump timing.

Of special note, the increased output of about 7 per cent (of the two units) is combined with an increase in consumption of only 34per cent. The specific fuel consumption rate at full power is 2.8 per cent lower than the consumption of the standard LWs and at all loads and speeds the gain is not less than 2 per cent.

At mid-speed and slightly below maximum torque the specific fuel consumption of the 5LW.20 is 0.334 lb /bhp /h which is equivalent to a brake thermal efficiency of 39.3 per cent. In the case of the 6LW.20, the corresponding figures are 0.331 lb /bhp /h and 39.7 per cent respectively. The units are said to have improved idling characteristics and to operate at a lower noise level. The ratings accord with the British Standard rating. AU141.

Exhibits at Earls Court will also include a 51.W. a 6LX, a 61-1LX and a 6LXB.
