• The effects of this special police effort on behaviour and accidents will be evaluated by
• New Scotland Yard's traffic and accident • research branch. The results will be con: sidered by the Joint Traffic Executive of the
• Metropolitan Police and the GLC.
• More than one in eight of all fatal per: sonal injury accidents in Metropolitan London
• occur at junctions controlled by traffic
• signals—this means 7,000 accidents a year, says the Yard. Many of these incidents could
• be avoided by better driver observance of the
• signals and the exercise of greater care on
• the part of pedestrians. •
