SCA MMELL Scammell Lorries Ltd..

Tolpits Lane, Watford, Herts.

THE only British manufacturer producing both tractive units and semi-trailers, Scammell offers a range of the latter of from 3 to 30 tons capacity. No drawbar trailers are made. All types of semi-trailer are, however, offered, single, twin-oscillating and tandem axles, step-frame, drop-frame machinery carriers and integral tank vehicles. A lightalloy integral van semi-trailer is also available. This is built in conjunction with the Metropolitan Cammell Carnage and Wagon Co. Ltd., and is known as the Univan. Three sizes of Univan are made these having nominal capacities of 1,200, 1,300 and 1,400 cu. ft. Tandem-axle semi-trailers are offered with either air or rubber suspension, all other models having leaf-spring suspension as standard. Drop-frame machinery carriers have a steel floor which acts as a load bearing member and helps keep the unladen weight to the minimum. Some models are made of high yield point steel to help further in this direction.

Scammell makes a wide variety of coupling gears which are available to other manufacturers. These include automatic couplings for semi-trailers with capacities of from 3 to 12 tons and a heavier automatic gear with pneumatic legs for 24-ton-gross articulated outfits. Fifth-wheel couplings to S.A.E./ S.M.M.T. standards for outfits of up to 24 tons g.t.w. are also produced together with the rubber-mounted Spherub semi-fixed turntable coupling for 24 ton outfits and a standard turntable for drop-frame semitrailers of 20, 25 and 30 tons capacity. Besides straight-frame and the other models referred to, Scammell produces integral-tank vehicles of up to 4,500 gal. capacity.

SCOTFORN Scottorn Ltd., Victor Works, 173 Kingston Road, New Malden, Surrey.

ALL-STEEL two-wheel drawbar trailers with capacities from 15 cwt. to 30 cwt. and tank trailers of 100 gal. and 250 gal. capacity are currently produced by Scottorn. A feature of the design is the degree of interchangeability which has been achieved between the trailers and towing vehicles such as the Land-Rover and Austin Gipsy. This particularly applies to greasing and servicing trailers and water filtration units produced for various military authorities. An interesting; development is the Bushmaster, a powered two-wheeled trailer. This uses a standard Land-Rover axle which is from the towing vehicle's power take prototype was shown at last year's !Eclat Motor Show, this being a 250 nk trailer and development trials are ly being carried out. Also offered ottorn is the Mamba 5 cwt. two trailer which is designed for use light vans and has a reinforced body. An improved version of this is now being developed.

YORK York Trailer Co. Ltd..

Corby, Northants.

YORK'S most successfulrange is undoubtedly its Freightmaster integral van semi-trailers which are offered in capacities of from 8 to 25 tons and in lengths of from

22 to 40 ft. At last year's Commercial Motor Show, York introduced its Teamster range of platform semi-trailers which consists of single-axle units of 14-ton capacity and 17to 27-ton capacity tandem-axle models. For this range a rolled-steel frame is used, this being a parallel-flange labeam of a high yield point steel, castellated to obtain strength with low weight. The same type of 1-section beam but not castellated is used fora 12-ton single-axle and a 15-ton twin-oscillating-axle model also produced but platform models below these capacities have rolled-steel-joist frames. These lower capacities are 7and 11-tonners which arc offered with fifth-wheel or automatic coupling, the same choice applying to the 12tonners and Freightmasters up to 12-ton capacity. The Teamster range is offered with fifth-wheel coupling only.

All York semi-trailers have one of four slandard suspensions; single and tandem axle designs have slipper-mounted leaf springs with axle location by adjustable rubber-bushed radius rods and are built of interchangeable components. The rear ends of the springs on each side in the tandem-axle layout are joined by rocker beams to prevent "axle hop ". Air suspension is an alternative on the tandem axle models.

Other York "trailer products include steelcoil carriers, extendible semi-trailers--called Trombone—and models with bodies to meet

T.I.R. requirements are available. Two types of semi-trailer coupling are made; the Yorkmatie interchangeable coupler, which allows a tractive unit to be operated with both fifth-wheel and automatic-type semitrailers and the Big-D fifth-wheel coupling which has a capacity of 50 tons,
