Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

of nature have devastated the Gulf of Mexico it is perhaps not surprisIng that there has been a general increase in fuel costs across Europe. The highest increase was in Italy (7.14% rising to €1.20/lit) followed by France (5.77% to €1.10/14 In the context of global disasters and actions against fuel prices at home it is a little surprising that the price in the UK has not risen and remains at €1.38/litre.

However, this picture doesn't look so positive when you note that two of the UK's nearest neighbours, Ireland and the Netherlands, have actually lowered their fuel costs this month, by 4.67% and 0.g2% respectively. The UK's fuel costs remain €0.18/ lit higher than the second most expensive country, Italy, at €1.20/lit. Last month we used comparisons or benchmarks to identify areas of improvement when reducing fuel management costs. This level of initiative needs senior sponsorship in the form of a Fuel Champion.

Once appointed the Fuel Champion can consider different methods of creating interest in, and focus on, improving fuel consumption among drivers and traffic office staff alike.

A simple starting method would be to start a league table showing starting consumption figures, then track them by means of graphs. You can be sure your staff's competitive spirit will soon be inspired.

Next month we will consider ways to build on this and provide incentives to drivers and traffic office staff.
