• Newport, Gwent-based Malson was given "a very serious warning" about maintenance when South irVals Deputy LA Alan Bourlet cut the duration of its licence to expire in January The company, trading as Mallett & Son, holds a licence for 10 vehicles and 16 trailers.

The DLA heard that its vehicles and trailers had attracted a number of prohibitions for defects including faulty tyres and loose wheeinuts. On one occasion a pedestrian footbridge being transported on the M5 moved when the timbers holding it snapped, forcing it down on to the trailer.

Director and transport manager Stephen Mallett said he had relied on drivers to report defects, and some problems had been caused by "driver failure". The foreman had left and Mallett made certain "maintenance was knocked into shape".

Hourlet said that he was concerned that this was the company's third appearance at a public inquiry It was a very serious matter for a company of this size and a further public inquiry would lead to serious consideration of the revocation of the licence.
