Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

The recent criticism of the excesses of some current bus and coach livery was timely, and the judges of the Commercial Motor Livery Competition are to be congratulated on firing their salvo in defence of good taste.

How intriguing it was, then, to find so soon afterwards (CM 22-28 September) both colour and monochrome presentations of the new Stagecoach Group Livery — this style of decoration of a nicely proportioned

double-deck bus body can only be described as gaudy, ugly and outrageously tasteless.

The environment in which we live can be damaged in many ways, including unwarranted assualt on the visual senses. Perhaps Margaret Thatcher, now projecting herself as the environmentalists' champion, might be persuaded to lead a campaign against such unnecessary and irrelevant barbarism!

Neil MacDonald, Walton on the Hill, Stafford.
