Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• Bus service reliability in Strathclyde has declined since deregulation, although more buses are now on the road, according to the directorgeneral of the Strathclyde Passenger Transport Executive, Stephen Locldey.

In his annual report he says bus distance has risen by 10% since deregulation. The number of passengers, however, has remained the same with the result that patronage per bus has dropped by 10% on average.

The report says: "This is clearly due, at least in part, to the fact that much of the additional mileage has been wrong ly allocated for the needs of the passengers. This is furthei exemplified by the reduced levels of service in many area in the evening and on Sundays despite action taken to secure subsidised services."

It also says that competition has not led to any decline in safety, but based on the number of complaints received does seem to have reduced service reliability.

The large number of buses running in Glasgow city centre is also slammed in the report because it is seen as exceedin demands and is a waste of resources.
