more than 12% from January 1989 — an increase of more than twice the rate of inflation.
Some short-distance fares will rise by 5p, but most prices will go up by 10p. It has been suggested that these fare increases are partly designed to improve financial performance before denationalisation in the 1990s.
Prices on the Underground have also risen and the additional 270 million in revenue generated by the bus and tube fares will finance the 21,500 million five-year programme designed to improve the Capital's transport system.
Derek Bayliss, London Transport Director of Planning, says: "We do not consider it unreasonable to ask passengers to make their contribution to the cost of the major service improvements planned."
