ACTION on raising rates will be discussed with new urgency at the Road Haulage Association's Northern District committee later this month.
Customers have to be persuaded that higher rates are essential to preserve a healthy haulage industry, says district manager Bill Farnorth. His members are now very worried that added pressure of increased fuel costs and the need for anti-spray equipment will do real damage to the industry if rates are not increased.
The committee will review percentage increases in recent years, and a campaign to raise rates is very likely, he said. Customers would be reminded that some guarantee of continuity is essential in commerce.
"The haulage industry is without question running more efficiently but the advantages cannot be all on the one side. There must be sufficient return and there has not been for several years. The industry is much thinner now. But losing weight and starving yourself to death are two different things completely."
