IT'S ALL happening on British Rail. The board is to spend £9m on improving its reputation and has engaged three advertising agencies to help it to do so. They do not include the stalwarts who thought up the age of the train, perhaps because it isn't. The NUM and the train driver's union, ASLEF, which have pledged their members to giving the paying customers a rough ride, are making sure of that.
Perhaps significantly, a resident in Harlington, Bedfordshire, has promised to deposit a load of manure at the local station. If disruption of services continues, it is likely to be delivered more in anger than in sorrow.
Horticulture is keeping the tracks busy also at West Dulwich, where grateful commuters have presented the local station with a hanging flower basket. Less grateful commuters hope it is strong enough for lynchings of NUM and ASLEF militants.
