THE CITIZENS of Hull have won a victory over the beastly 24hour clock. Municipal bus services are now timed according to the good old British 12-hour clock, which 93.5 per cent of passengers asked said they preferred.
This is a by-product of a drastic change in the presentation of information. The traditional book of time and fare tables had become too costly to produce at a price acceptable to the public, so it was replaced by 31 pocket-sized leaflets, each dealing with a group of services and issued free.
Fares are also shown in "clear" instead of in code — an innovation welcomed by 97.5 per cent of passengers. Altogether Philip A. Vine, general manager of Kingstonupon-Hull City Transport, and his colleagues have covered themselves with glory. I hope they are not crushed in the rush of new passengers.
