PREVIEW

THE MOTOR SHOW at the National Exhibition Centre in Birmingham may turn out to be the last one to feature psv exhibits if moves within the industry to establish an exclusive bus and coach exhibition are successful. This Show — October 20-28 — does, however, promise to be one that will not be forgotten. For busmen there will be new British bus and coach chassis with brand-new models from at least three manufacturers. For the coachmen, Bedford's Venturer and the integral Volvo ClOM make their debuts. New models from Portugal, Germany and the Netherlands will add to the interest as will some important new examples of British coachwork.

We preview the Show in a special issue next week: Noel Millier previews the coach and bus exhibits in a What to look for feature, and Bill Brock and Tim Blakemore provide personal selections of some of the most significant exhibits in the light, medium and heavy lorry sectors. There will be surprise exhibits at Birmingham, there always are, and we shall certainly report on those in our Show Review issue (CM October 27). But already it is clear that innovation will abound this year mainly because, more than ever before,

the commercial vehicle industry is now beginning to see real benefit from the latest computer technology.

If you are looking for reasons to justify the bother of a trip to Birmingham and a couple of days away from a busy office, look no further than next week's CM.

Our preview issue is written both to help those who can get to the NEC and as a lively, informative account for those who can't get there. But we do ask visitors to fit in a visit to the CM Stand (No 5121 — we've an exciting display backed by all our current publications for sale; we cater for both established operators and newcomers.

• In the same week that we preview the Birmingham Show, we have the Paris Show report for you. Technical editor Bill Brock and psv specialist Noel Millier have been there accompanied by CM photographer Colin Sowman. See what's been catching the interest of the international transport press in CM next week.

• Another big event is CM's Fleet Management Conference on October 11 which also acts as a get-together for people from all parts of our industry. This one is our 21st FMC and you can read the papers in next week's CM. And a report of the ensuing discussions and the manufacturers'/dealers' panel will be published in CM October 20.

You will be out of touch if you don't read our next three issues — and we've more themes planned through to the end of the year.
