PASSENGER operations began as recently as 1974. During that year 55,000 people were carried; by 1981 the figure had raced to 1,119,823.
Townsend Thoresen — a sister company to the Port of Felixstowe within the European Ferries Group — was the first company to begin passenger services to the port with a service between Felixstowe and Zeebrugge. A new passenger terminal was opened in 1979.
