THE SPICER Transmission Division of Dana is developing a new range of synchromesh gearboxes for European 16 to 24-tanners.
A five-speed prototype will be at the Motor Show and this model will become available next year. Spicer plans later to introduce six, nine, 10 and 12speed derivatives.
All these gearboxes are based on the American Spicer CM-40 constant-mesh and SM 40 synchromesh five-speed singlecountershaft gearbox which went into production in the USA 11 months ago.
The American gearboxes have a maximum torque capacity of 569Nrn (420 Ibft), but Wolverhampton will adapt the European versions to suit engines with torque ratings of up to 732Nm (540 lbft).
Six-speed boxes are popular in Europe at 16 tons gvw and the SM40 range aims to win a larger share of that business. It will eventually replace the T5300 and T5-400 Turner boxes.
A CM40 five-speed gearbox with its aluminium alloy casing weighs 91kg compared to a T5400's 167kg, which stems mainly from its cast-iron casing.
Spicer has no plans to introduce an alloy case for the T5400 as it has with the 15-250 used in Leyland's Roadrunner.
One pressure diecast alloy case will be used for the entire SM40 range; spacers will be added as required to the casing's front face.
