LIFE at CM is nothing if not varied as proved by our next vehicle, the Saviem crosscountry SM8. This was a 4x4 machine powered by a 5.3litre (323cuin) engine which drove through a single-plate clutch to a four-speed main gearbox and two-speed transfer box. Saviem claims a 1 in 1 gradeability for the SM8 which, regrettably, we didn't put to the test simply because we couldn't find a steep enough hill!
The vehicle did manage a 1 in 3 with no fuss whatsoever so the claim is probably pretty accurate.
