Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

Meaty torque

THE PERFORMANCE of the Berliet TR 280 was one of the surprises of the year and I am not being rude when I say this. The 280 equalled the best-ever round trip journey time set by the Cumminspowered Seddon Atkinson, but it did this by good handling and a meaty torque curve rather than by out and out power.

Berliet has worked long and hard on the "Maxi Couple" concept and the results can be seen in the MDS-06-35-40 engine in the 280.

A turbocharged design with a capacity of 12 litres (732cuin), it produces 190kW (255 bhp) at (very important) only 1,800rpm. The vital maximum torque is no less than 1,150Nm (850Ibft) at 1,300rpm.

In some ways, the Berliet behaved like that other 280 tested during the year, the MAN, with its preference for hard work. On the motorway stages the Berliet was returning around seven mpg while averaging nearly 60mph. However, this didn't improve by very much when the speed was dropped for the A road sections.
