Operator's vehicle
AN OPERATOR'S vehicle rather than a driver's vehicle was our verdict on the Rollspowered Scammell Crusader. Our test model featured the Eagle 290 variant which produced 205kW (275bhp) net installed, a nine-speed Fuller box and Leyland hubreduction axle.
In terms of fuel consumption and overall journey time the Crusader put up a good performance at 41.3 lit/100km (6.8 mpg) allied to a fast journey time. What let it down was the cab and the cab related items especially in such areas as noise, seating and ride.
The noise level left a lot to be desired especially at high revs and although Leyland claims that the cab is fully insulated, there was certainly room for further improvement as far as the CM ears were concerned.
The cab is also a little austere when judged alongside the opposition. As the cab does not tilt, access to the .engine is gained either from a hatch inside the cab or from the front after swinging the radiator out
