Nothing teaches like failure as International Harvester found when they started to build lorries in Doncaster in 1965, They produced nearly 2,000 but admitted defeat in 1968. They learned the hard way that IH vehicles, though market leaders in the USA were unsuitable for Britain and that the best way to enter the UK market was to buy a highly respected company such as Seddon Atkinson.
J. Patrick Kaine, president of the IH Truck Group, who said at the launch of the new 300 series (see last week's CM) that Seddon Atkinson were to be the key to IH European, Middle East and African ventures, was questioned by press representatives about his company's link with DAF.
