ANOTHER manufacturer to announce a new model at the Birmingham motor show is Renault Trucks and Buses with the Berliet TR 305.

Introduced for the French market last year, it is plated at 40 tons gcw. The engine is a charge-cooled version of the familiar six-cylinder 12 litre (732cuin) turbocharged engine featured in the TR 280 which continues in production alongside the 305.

The engine now develops 222kW (298bhp) net installed to BS AU 141a at 1,900rpm with a maximum torque of 1.225Nm (925Ibft) at 1,300rpm. This drives through at 395mm (15.5in) diameter twin dry plate clutch to a nine-speed Fuller RTO 9509A constant mesh gearbox.

The 13-speed Fuller box is an option as is a nine-speed synchromesh unit from ZF. At the rear the 13 ton P1332 Berliet double reduction axle is fitted. Semi-elliptic leaf springs and anti-roll bars are fitted front and rear with double acting shock absorbers on the front axle. The ZF 8065 integral power steering layout is a standard feature.

The familiar Berliet type KB 2400 cab is retained. This is a sleeper type which tilts hydraulically to 700.

Without fifth wheel the TR305, which has a 3.3m (10ft 10in) wheelbase weighs around 61/2tons.
