AS LONDON Transport prepares to introduce the second stage of its short-term bus plan later this month, the London Transport Passengers Committee has dismissed advertised bus schedules as unattainable.
LTPC chairman Fred Sturch said ,last week: "The present bus schedules have never been operated in full during the nine-year life of this committee, and the cost of achieving and maintaining full schedules is almost certainly more than national and local government would be prepared to pay." Calling for a realistic and strong public transport service .cope when oil reserves diminish, he called for all bus and rail services in London to be co-ordinated.
"Rail travel is inherently more reliable than bus travel and it is becoming even clearer that as many road users as possible should be encouraged on to rail."
LTPC says it is unlikely whether a 100 per cent staff complement will ever be achieved by London Transport, but it believes matters will be helped if efforts are made to improve morale.
"Morale can only be raised by effective action, for example to relieve congestion on London's roads to tighten bus control and to restore public confidence and staff pride in the bus services in the capital."
TAYSIDE Regional Council's controversial plans to extend Dundee city buses to Monifieth have been announced.
The timetable, which will probably be contested strongly by Scottish Bus Group's Alexander (Northern) calls for a 35 minute weekday service and a 70 minute frequency on Sundays.
TWENTY temporary bus shelters are being provided by GKN at car parks for the NEC Motor Show.
The 20ft x 10ft shelters, with blue and white markings, will be at strategic points in the 17 outside car parks which are all named after animals and birds.
