Cheaper travel?
GREATER Manchester Council wants bus and train fares to be reduced on seven days before Christmas.
Following a motion from eight Labour group members last week that half fares be charged on the eight Saturdays before Christmas, a Conservative amendment was accepted for reduced rates on some Sundays and weekdays.
It proposes a 7p and 10p flat fare on the four Sundays before Christmas and between 10am and 4pm on three weekdays in the same period.
It looks likely, though, that Greater Manchester Transport will press instead for the hours of operation to be altered to run from 9.30am until 3.30pm and for the three weekdays to be as far away from Christmas as possible.
GMT feels the demand for travel generated by reduced fares could exceed the capacity of its vehicles.
