Main arterial routes will be given particular attention and new industrial premises will be sited, wherever possible, at points with good road or rail access.
GLC reaffirms its faith in such large freight complexes as that being built at Neasden in North London. It combines rail freight facilities with parking areas, security patrols, hostel, canteen, fuel ling, plant hire, pallet pool, freight forwarding, and customs clearance facilities.
At a lower level, the common user freight centre for small hauliers at Purley Way, Croydon is viewed with GLC favour and has been followed by another at Tufnell Park. Ten more are in the pipeline once negotiations are completed.
It also recognises that facilities for lorry drivers have deteriorated as car drivers' needs have been served, and GLC proposes to invest in cafe facilities at freight terminals.
Lorry routes are rejected by the council as impractical due to the lack of a proper trunk road by-pass to the capital. But it sees them as an answer once the M25 orbital motorway is completed, provided that largeā¢ scale restrictions are not operated.
It sees lorry route restric tions as being most effec when used to ease local blems, such as "rat-runs residential areas, but in that they should be desil to make ample provisior servicing.
