at rural bus decline

• "The Government is deeply concerned about the decline in rural bus services," said Mr Eldon Griffiths, DoE ParliamentaryUnder-Secretary, in Ely last week. This affected the elderly poor, housewives and young people without cars most seriously, he said.

Mr Griffiths went on to say that the Government was doing its best to sustain rural bus services by providing financial assistance in the form of grants and by encouraging local authorities to do more.

Minibuses and postal buses should be used where appropriate and measures would be introduced to remove some of the unnecessary legislation when the opportunity arose, said Mr Griffiths. But, he went on, it was car pools which offered most help for people in rural areas. The DoE was encouraging local organizations to set-up "social" car services.
