• Thirty-six per cent of road vehicles checked by Cheshire County weights and measures inspectors were found to be overloaded, says the chief inspector, Mr Kenneth Nattras, in a report on traffic and safety.
He says that in the last 12 months inspectors stopped and checked 5090 heavy vehicles and their findings led to 329 court cases and fines totalling £3166.50 on haulage firms and drivers.
"Clearly this high percentage of overloading is quite unsatisfactory from a number of points of view," says Mr Nattras.
He also comments on the problems of installing more large-capacity weighbridges and refers to hopes that research now being undertaken may provide a type of strip electronic weighing unit.
