Small business measures to be treated with caution

by Louise Cote THE BRITISH Chamber of Commerce (BCC) tells CM that it welcomes the Government's series of measures designed to help small businesses, but worries that a lack of overall strategy may cause problems further down the line.

"The VAT holiday and the penny on National Insurance [suggested by the Conservatives] are both welcome —hut, for instance, the NI initiative would only apply to four employee& Why four?

We really need a lasting and well-thought-out policy, otherwise where will it leave us in 18 months?" asks Sam Turvey, a BCC spokesman. "Will we have to refund the gap it has left when coming out of this downturn?" Turvey says the BCC would still like the Government to scrap its 2p fuel escalator. He continues: "It has been postponed. It's hard for companies dependent on road use to plan eashflow not knowing if this will happen or not.

"We also dislike the notion of a workplace parking levy, which is yet another stealth tax," he concludes.
