WITHOUT calling on the objectors, the South Eastern Traffic Commissioners, at Reading on Tuesday, refused to grant licences to operate express services at week-ends and Bank Holidays from the Wok ingham and Bracknell areas to various south coast resorts.
The application, said Mr. H. J. Thom, chairman, was misconceived.
The application, by Brimblecombe Bros., Ltd., Wokingham, was opposed by Smiths Luxury Coaches (Reading), Ltd., Windsorian Motor Coach Services, Ltd., Royal Blue Express Services, Southdown Motor Services, Ltd., and British Railways.
Observations made by the Commissioners in January, 1957, when considering an application by Smiths, to which Brimblecombe objected, were relevant, said Mr. N. R. Fox-Andrews, Q.C., for Brimblecombe. They had said then that although Brimblecombe held excursion and tour licences, it did not give them an absolute right to be considered as the regular express operators.
Brimblecombe at that time did not consider there was need for the services, but much had happened since then and they now asked -to be granted facilities.
Giving decision, the chairman said that population increase was not a basis on which to make a grant. On Mr. Brimblecombe's own statement, they could see no case for the objectors to answer.
In their previous decision they had said that if Brimblecombc applied, the application would be dealt with on its merits. The previous decision was not an encouragement to Brimblecombe to demand a share without evidence of need.
